A Letter To My Sponsor Child’s Mom

Dear Kojo’s mom,

I had the privilege of meeting you and your family last week. Thank you for opening your home to us. You and your community were so welcoming even though it had to be a little intimidating with all of the unfamiliar people, cameras, and questions. But you handled it so well. The time with your family was one of the highlights of our week in Ghana. You are an amazing mother and it is apparent that you love your children and Jesus.

Kojo 1

You mentioned that money was tight and sometimes there wasn’t enough food for you, Kojo, and his brother. I can’t imagine that feeling. It broke my heart. Especially knowing that you, while pregnant, are most likely the one who goes without.

You said Kojo often has headaches and is sick. I don’t have kids but I know what it’s like seeing someone you love dearly in pain and feeling helpless. It’s tormenting and scary. But I have no doubt that you’re doing your very best for your family.

It also has to be incredibly difficult waiting for the past 310 days for Kojo to get a Compassion sponsor. However, in the midst of all of these hardships, you continue to rely on God. I hope my faith can one day be as strong as yours.

Kojo 2

When we met, we promised that when we returned to the United States we would find Kojo a sponsor. Unfortunately, we didn’t have much of an opportunity to share his story on the radio.

But the good news is… we didn’t need to because my wife, Amanda, and I have decided to sponsor Kojo. I know what you’re thinking. Really? I waited 310 days and this guy is Kojo’s sponsor? I know, I know… I would probably feel the same way. But we are thrilled to start this journey with you and we know that through Compassion, your prayer will be answered and Kojo will continue to grow in Jesus.

As Kojo’s sponsor, we promise to stand with you and pray for Kojo daily. As we write to Kojo, we promise to continuously remind him that Jesus loves him. We will share our lives with him: the joy and the difficulties. We will make sure he knows to always listen to his mother and respect his elders.

Kojo's School

We are overjoyed to be Kojo’s sponsor and so thankful that Compassion is in your community. We look forward to seeing the many great things that God has in store for Kojo and your family.

May God bless you!

Sincerely,

Justin and Amanda
