Looking back can actually be a good thing

One of my favorite quotes from my pastor is that our past is a point of reference, not a place of residence.

Usually when I think of that, it calls to mind those things in my history that were more negative than anything…but there are things in your past that were good, lovely, positive and empowering that can ensure a stronger future as well.

In my weight watchers meeting this week, we talked about anchors…those things from a more positive time: a picture, an article of clothing, a cherished keepsake…anything that reminds us of better days…these are the things on which she challenged us to individually focus…or anchor, in order to stray away from the bad habits that got us into our current situation. I believe that God is calling us to live our faith out in that fashion as well. Think back to a time when you were really standing strong in your life. Go ahead and allow yourself to go there…but don’t stay there, cuz then you’re simply resting on your laurels-which will hold you back every bit as when you wallow on the negative.

I guess all I’m trying to say is, when you look at your past as that point of reference, it doesn’t always have to be the wicked bad stuff you did…it can be those times of strength…all designed to help us continue to move forward in Christ as we become the people He intends for us to be.
