We’ve been taught from an early age that reading is FUNdamental. It’s engrained in us to teach our children how to read for a number of developmental goals and reasons as they mature. But sometimes we forget the #1 reason why reading is so important
It’s FUN!
Reading takes us to places we’ve never been before or places we could never imagine! Another misconception about reading is that it is a solo activity! Ask anyone who has read to a child – they can tell you it’s a group activity. We can easily see that when reading to a child as they laugh out loud at your voices, as they marvel at the pictures, and even begin to read to YOU!
But it’s not just for little kids! Sure you may not read out loud in different voices to your teenager but who said you had to lock yourselves in different rooms for private reading time? Set aside a specific time to sit together and read as a family in the same room. Afterwards find out what they read about and what it means to them and you’ll start to see those familial bonds grow stronger.
That’s why we’ve partnered with the Ferst Foundation for the WAY Reading Challenge! We are challenging families of ALL ages across North Florida and South Georgia to set aside 20 minutes a day to read together. Just 2o minutes! After school, before dinner, before bed whenever works for you! You can hold yourself accountable by signing the pledge below!
