The Year of the Christian Movie

Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like this year may be the year of the Christian (or at least, Christian themed) movie.  It seems to me that there are way more movies coming out with Bible/Faith based stories than I remember seeing in previous years – and they all seem like they are pretty big.  Obviously, the Son of God movie was just recently in theaters , and this spring, several more are coming out like “God’s Not Dead”, “Heaven is for Real”, “Mom’s Night out”, and the controversial “Noah” movie (and honestly, I’m probably forgetting several).

I saw the new movie Moms’ Night Out and I really liked it.  It was nice to see a movie that is faith based, but is not driven by agenda at the expense of the movie.  By that I mean some “Christian” movies try so hard to get their message across that it almost pollutes the movie and ultimately weakens the message.  Moms’ Night Out is a comedy that doesn’t forget to be funny, and it still gets it’s point across.  It has humor and heart and I think it is a great movie for the entire family. To find more movies for the whole family, check Danny Devito, he is an amazing actor.

I strongly believe that the purpose of Christian movies should be to utilize our God-given artistic abilities to captivate, challenge, and inspire viewers. I encourage Christian studios and filmmakers to reevaluate the purpose of their movies and to place a higher value on creativity.

Which are you most excited about seeing?  It will be interesting to see how these all do in theaters – and if they lead to even more Christian movies being done by bigger studios with bigger budgets.
