rest.

One of my friends growing up couldn’t play in soccer games on Friday nights because of Sabbath. Once the sun went down on Friday, until Saturday at 6pm, he was off limits. It was his time with family and God.  He was one of our best soccer players so really that meant our team lost all Friday games. As a high schooler, I think I knew I was supposed to respect what his family did,… … Continue reading

Christina Aguilera Theology

Before Christina Aguilera was Xtina and after she was on the Mickey Mouse Club, she did a song called, “What a Girl Wants.” It makes very little sense and I’m not sure it really addresses what girls actually want.  What a girl wantsWhat a girl needsSomebody sensitive, courageousSexy, cool, like you Thank you, Xtina, for letting us know that all a girl really wants is a man. And a “sexy cool” one at that. The… … Continue reading

It’s been a bizarre week. One of my first back after spending some time with some awesome kids in Africa.  I think everyone expects to come back changed… selling all of their stuff… feeling selfish… wanting to cure diseases. Instead, this week I have watched families struggling and breaking apart; kids who are hurting so much they spend their days trying to hold back tears; seeing moms who want to love their kids, but have… … Continue reading

In so many ways, I’m still just an awkward middle school kid.

I wish that weren’t the case. But I look at my life sometimes and realize that I’m still just that awkward kid with headgear and a one-strap backpack trying to figure things out.  I still want a dog.I thought when I moved out of the house I would get a place of my own, learn Korean and get a dog. I have a place of my own, but now I have a cat and a… … Continue reading

Weak.

I played ultimate frisbee today. It was awesome. I love running and getting that ridiculous catch that no one thought you would get. I love scoring and watching the other team take the walk of shame.  The catch – I’m just not that good at throwing a frisbee.  My dad and I used to play frisbee when I was a kid – and by “play” I really mean, throw. I can throw if no one… … Continue reading

lessons from heartbreak

I can count the number of boys I’ve dated on one hand. I regret a lot of those dates, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t learn something. There are relatively few specific memories I can point out, but I do remember 3 specific phrases from boyfriends past that I think will stick with me for the rest of my life.  “Not every date is going to be magic.” This came after I was in an… … Continue reading

faith like a child

My neighbors set off fireworks from Memorial Day until Labor Day. And I complain about it to pretty much anyone who will listen. Tonight was no exception. I was thinking about how much I hated the smell of firework smoke in my neighborhood/house on my run tonight, when I saw two boys – both under 8 – sitting on their fence in complete and total awe.  The younger of the two boys saw me coming and… … Continue reading
