Middays with Joy

Choosing Gratitude, Even Here

Posted 4 days ago - Aug 29, 2025

From: Joy Summers

I burst into tears as I walked into my home and heard the familiar hum of massive fans. The floors were covered in blue tarps and there was a gaping hole in the ceiling. We had experienced water damage yet again in this home that I had always seen as a “gift from God.” This was our 3rd incident in the last 2 years. The restoration workers were milling around. Taking in the full extent of the damage brought on the emotion I wasn’t prepared for. Insurance was being difficult and decided not to cover this one.

“God, what is going on?”

“How will we pay for this?”

“Why is this happening?”

Chances are you’ve prayed prayers that sounded like this before. Life can knock us down and throw us off so quickly. This is when I NEED the music on WayFM more than ever. The lyrics in our songs remind my emotions of the truth my heart knows. God is not caught off guard. He is a provider. He is my peace in ANY storm.

The more I wrestled with the idea of our house being a cursed water mess vs a gift from God, the more I knew I needed to actively do something to change my perspective. I decided to start thanking God consistently for all the GOOD things about our home. Every night before bed I have been thanking him for air conditioning, floors, a bed, and the tiny snores my home contains. I’ve heard the more you complain, the more you will see things to complain about. However, the more you thank God for things in your life, the more you will see ways He is present in your life. I’m trying to apply that as we head into this busy fall. Instead of resenting the ways this season may be particularly hard, try thanking God for the good He has already done over and over. Your emotions just might follow.
