A More Hopeful Version of Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For”

What was I made for?

Joy here and that is a question we all ask at some point in our lives. The search for meaning in this life is so powerful that its description in Billie Eilish’s song, “What Was I Made For,” united people all over the world. The song is featured in the Barbie movie and just won a Golden Globe. Truly, the song is hauntingly beautiful, but also incredibly sad.

I couldn’t help but wish there was a more hopeful version that shared the meaning and hope I have found in this life through my faith.

So I wrote one…

It felt weird to simply read it on the radio, so I pushed through my nerves and sang it. You can hear it below and read my lyrics that attempt to point to Jesus and what we were made for.

Original song from Billie Eilish

“When did it end? All the enjoyment
I’m sad again, don’t tell my boyfriend
It’s not what he’s made for
What was I made for?

‘Cause I, ’cause I
I don’t know how to feel
But I wanna try
I don’t know how to feel
But someday I might
Someday I might

Think I forgot how to be happy
Something I’m not, but something I can be
Something I wait for
Something I’m made for
Something I’m made for”

My version:

“When it all ends, all the enjoyment
I’ll find again, real joy in your presence
To be with my creator
What was I was made for

‘Cause you, ’cause you
Defeated death for me
I’m fully loved
When I don’t know how to feel
I’ll trust your ways, not mine

I’ll trust your ways not mine

Praising your name, giving you glory
Just to know you, and be known by you
Something I long for
Something I’m made for
Something I’m made for
