unexpected

It’s been a bizarre couple of days. I’ve had moments that were high highs and some unforseen lows. Nothing crazy or even life altering – but you know those little things that sort of all chip away at you? Yeah. Those kind of lows. Yesterday my car got towed and I ponied up about $300 to get it back. Not awesome.  Today, I am pretty sure I lost my ID and I’m not sure where… … Continue reading

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBy2D8p5Kpw Doesn’t matter how many times I hear this song. It takes me back to a time in my life where  this was a reminder of the only thing that I could hold onto and my desperate need to be lifted up by something or Someone higher than I was. Just never gets old. (Source: http://www.youtube.com/) … Continue reading

family.

As we started middle school camp last week, one of leaders prayed that our students would get “to feel just a taste of family.” It made me tear up then, but by the end of the week after several conversations, that sentiment became more of a goal than a just a phrase. I was adopted into an awesome family – two parents, a sister (and for more than half my life, a brother-in-law) – who… … Continue reading

camp.

I grew up going to and working at one of the best camps on the planet. Great boss, good programming, people who love Jesus and some really fantastic kids. When I had the chance to talk about real life with those kids, they had questions about baptism, getting along with their parents, what it really means to “dedicate their life to Jesus,” and if they should get baptized.  Today, I work in a completely different… … Continue reading

rest.

One of my friends growing up couldn’t play in soccer games on Friday nights because of Sabbath. Once the sun went down on Friday, until Saturday at 6pm, he was off limits. It was his time with family and God.  He was one of our best soccer players so really that meant our team lost all Friday games. As a high schooler, I think I knew I was supposed to respect what his family did,… … Continue reading

Christina Aguilera Theology

Before Christina Aguilera was Xtina and after she was on the Mickey Mouse Club, she did a song called, “What a Girl Wants.” It makes very little sense and I’m not sure it really addresses what girls actually want.  What a girl wantsWhat a girl needsSomebody sensitive, courageousSexy, cool, like you Thank you, Xtina, for letting us know that all a girl really wants is a man. And a “sexy cool” one at that. The… … Continue reading

worn.

It’s been a bizarre week. One of my first back after spending some time with some awesome kids in Africa.  I think everyone expects to come back changed… selling all of their stuff… feeling selfish… wanting to cure diseases. Instead, this week I have watched families struggling and breaking apart; kids who are hurting so much they spend their days trying to hold back tears; seeing moms who want to love their kids, but have… … Continue reading

In so many ways, I’m still just an awkward middle school kid.

I wish that weren’t the case. But I look at my life sometimes and realize that I’m still just that awkward kid with headgear and a one-strap backpack trying to figure things out.  I still want a dog.I thought when I moved out of the house I would get a place of my own, learn Korean and get a dog. I have a place of my own, but now I have a cat and a… … Continue reading
